“The medium is the message”—this is very much the adage that is perfectly encapsulated in the seventh issue of 12. At a time when the elegy of print as the most privileged medium of information dissemination is writ large, and paeans are being sung about the democratic nature of digital mediums, this issue of the magazine comes as a welcome caesura as it carefully delves into how a predominantly visual medium such as photography gets explored through the medium of print. The arresting photo-narrative is complimented by erudite and compelling text as it brings alive twelve different stories to the readers through chapters classified as photo-essay, archive, interview, graphic novel, photo-fiction, travelogue, and poetry to name a few—thus blurring the dichotomy between the nouns ‘reader’ and ‘audience’, and enabling the individual accessing this magazine, the scope to undergo as lived experience, the act of witnessing a photo exhibition and that of reading an illustrated book.
